Michael B. Jordan achieved a historic milestone at the Academy Awards after winning the Best Actor trophy for his remarkable dual performance in the film Sinners.

Jordan’s performance as twin brothers Stack and Smoke in the Ryan Coogler-directed drama earned him widespread acclaim and ultimately secured him the prestigious award, making him only the sixth Black man in history to win the Oscar for Best Actor.

While accepting the award, the actor took a moment to express gratitude and reflect on the journey that led to the achievement. He began by acknowledging his faith and thanking the people who supported him throughout the project.

Jordan also paid tribute to the film’s director, Ryan Coogler, praising his belief in the story and the culture it represents. He described Coogler not only as a creative partner but also as a close friend who gave him the freedom and trust needed to fully embody the characters.

“Sinners” emerged as one of the night’s biggest contenders, earning an impressive 16 nominations and eventually winning several major awards. Among them was Best Original Screenplay for Coogler and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw.

Arkapaw’s victory was particularly historic. She became the first woman ever to win the Oscar for cinematography, and also the first person of African American or Filipino heritage to claim the award in that category.

Set in the Mississippi Delta during the early 1930s, “Sinners” blends supernatural elements with historical themes, exploring the struggles, culture, and resilience of Black communities living under the harsh realities of the Jim Crow era. The film was written and directed by Coogler and produced alongside Zinzi Coogler and long-time collaborator Sev Ohanian.

Jordan and Coogler share a long creative partnership that began with the 2013 film Fruitvale Station, in which Jordan portrayed Oscar Grant. The two later reunited for the blockbuster Black Panther before collaborating again on “Sinners.”

With his win, Jordan joins an elite group of Black actors who have claimed the Best Actor Oscar, including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith. Meanwhile, Halle Berry remains the only Black woman to have won the Best Actress category.

The film’s success continued throughout the ceremony. Composer Ludwig Göransson also received the Oscar for Best Original Score for his work on “Sinners.” During his speech, he praised Coogler as one of the most compelling storytellers in modern cinema. The award marked Göransson’s second Oscar for a project directed by Coogler, following his earlier win for the soundtrack of “Black Panther.”

By the end of the night, “Sinners” had firmly established itself as one of the most celebrated films of the year, combining powerful storytelling, groundbreaking performances, and historic achievements on Hollywood’s biggest stage.
