The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya, has regained control of the union’s national secretariat in Abuja following a brief takeover by a rival faction.
Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo, visited the facility on Tuesday to inspect the extent of damage after reclaiming the premises. His return came hours after a faction led by Tajudeen Baruwa had occupied the secretariat, citing court rulings it claimed justified the move.
Baruwa maintained that his faction’s action was lawful and based on valid judgments from both lower and appellate courts. He insisted the takeover was peaceful and aimed at reclaiming what rightfully belonged to his group after allegedly waiting for about two years for compliance with court orders.
He further stated that the police had been duly informed, with copies of the judgments submitted, though he expressed dissatisfaction with the response from security agencies. Baruwa also alleged that one of his members was injured during the incident but noted that the situation remained under control and open to reconciliation.
Reacting earlier, Akinsanya described the development as an unlawful occupation, stressing that he was not a party to the judgment being referenced. He disclosed that the ruling had already been appealed and that a stay of execution was in place.
In a statement, he reaffirmed his position as the union’s national president and urged members to remain calm and law-abiding while the legal process continues.
Security agencies have since maintained a presence around the secretariat as tensions linger, with both factions holding firm to their claims over the leadership of the union.
