Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye has dismissed comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, stating that he will neither be afraid nor intimidated by the controversial remarks.

The controversy began after Wike, during a public appearance, said he would have “broken the television and shot” Okinbaloye over discussions suggesting that Nigeria risks sliding into a one-party system — a comment that quickly sparked widespread criticism across the country.

The remarks also drew condemnation from Amnesty International, which described the statement as reckless and inappropriate, warning that such language could undermine democratic values and press freedom.

Reacting on Sunday, Okinbaloye stood firmly by his earlier position, stressing that democracy thrives on diverse opinions and healthy political competition. He warned that any move toward a one-sided political environment could threaten Nigeria’s democratic growth.

“The truth remains that democracy is endangered when electoral choices become one-directional,” he said, noting that his comments were not targeted at any political party but rather intended to encourage national development and democratic balance.

Okinbaloye further disclosed that Wike personally contacted him following the backlash to clarify that his comments were not meant to be taken literally. Despite the clarification, the journalist maintained that threats or violent rhetoric should never be part of democratic discourse.

“Even with the clarification, we must emphasize that violent language has no place in a democratic society,” he stated.

Reaffirming his commitment to journalism, the Channels Television presenter stressed that he remains undeterred.

“I want to make it clear — I am not afraid and I will never be intimidated. Disagreements are normal, but they must never lead to hostility or threats,” he said.

Okinbaloye concluded by emphasizing his dedication to holding leaders accountable, stating that he will continue asking tough questions in the interest of the public and the preservation of democracy.
