Softbank Group sets record with 5 trillion yen in net profits | The Asahi Shimbun: Breaking News, Japan News and Analysis

A group of major Japanese corporations led by SoftBank Group Corp. has announced the creation of a new artificial intelligence company aimed at accelerating domestic AI development and reducing reliance on foreign technologies.

The initiative also includes participation from leading firms such as NEC Corporation, Honda Motor Co., and Sony Group Corporation, marking one of the largest coordinated AI efforts by Japanese industry players.

Building Japan’s Own AI Powerhouse

According to sources familiar with the project, the new company will focus on developing large-scale artificial intelligence systems designed specifically for use by Japanese businesses.

The goal is to close the growing gap between Japan and global AI leaders in the United States and China by building a competitive domestic AI model capable of supporting industries across multiple sectors.

The consortium plans to initially share its AI models with Japanese companies before expanding into advanced applications such as robotics and smart manufacturing systems.

100 Engineers to Drive Development

The new firm is expected to employ around 100 AI engineers and will be led by a senior executive from SoftBank.

Additional backing comes from major financial and industrial players including Nippon Steel Corporation, Kobe Steel Ltd., and leading banking institutions such as MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Mizuho Bank.

Focus on Robotics and Industrial AI

Beyond language models, the company is expected to expand into industrial applications, including AI systems for factory automation and robotics — a key area of strength for Japan’s manufacturing sector.

SoftBank and NEC will spearhead initial development, with future collaboration expected from AI research firm Preferred Networks Inc.

Government Support Expected

The project is also expected to benefit from funding support through Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), which is reportedly preparing up to 1 trillion yen (about $6.3 billion) for domestic AI initiatives.

Strategic Push for Global AI Competition

Industry analysts say the move reflects Japan’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in the global AI race, particularly as US and Chinese firms continue to dominate the sector.

By combining corporate investment, government funding, and industrial expertise, Japan hopes to build a self-reliant AI ecosystem capable of powering future economic growth and technological innovation.
