The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Eric Nwombu for allegedly impersonating a Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) coordinator and unlawfully possessing examination materials.

According to a statement issued on Saturday, April 18, by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, April 14, in Atani by operatives attached to the Inspector-General of Police Safe School Initiative.

Ikenga explained that Nwombu was arrested following reports that he had collected 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) slips from several candidates at a cybercafé in the area.

During the arrest, police operatives recovered eight UTME examination slips and an exercise book containing the names and examination numbers of multiple students. The suspect reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the items found in his possession.

The police spokesperson further revealed that Nwombu allegedly introduced himself as a coordinator for the 2026 UTME in Atani when questioned by staff at the computer centre. However, his claims raised suspicion among the workers, who subsequently alerted security operatives.

“On sighting the operatives, the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended,” Ikenga stated.

He added that preliminary investigations have commenced, noting that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further inquiry.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the integrity of public examinations. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
