Agege Council Chairman, Hon. Tunde Azeez 'Disco', Resigns Over Health Challenges - Blackbox Nigeria

The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Mr. Tunde Azeez, popularly known as Disco, has stepped down from his position, citing deteriorating health conditions that have hindered his ability to effectively perform his duties.

Azeez formally tendered his resignation letter to the Agege Local Government Legislative Arm, where he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and explained that his decision was driven by the need to focus on his recovery.

“My health status has greatly affected my capacity to discharge my responsibilities as expected, and it is only fair to the people of Agege that I step aside,” Azeez stated in his letter.

Following deliberations, the legislative council unanimously accepted his resignation, acknowledging his years of dedication and contribution to the development of the local government. The council also wished him a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavours, emphasizing that public service should never come at the cost of personal health and well-being.

With Azeez’s resignation, attention has now shifted to the council’s Vice Chairman, Ganiyu Obasa, who is the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa. His position as the deputy chairman places him in line to assume leadership responsibilities in an acting capacity pending further directives.

However, the development has reignited political tension in Agege, where residents have recently accused Speaker Obasa of manipulating the local political structure to install loyalists in key positions.

In May, a group of residents under the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) banner appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the Agege local government election, alleging that candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions were handpicked without fair party consultation.

During a protest held at the time, demonstrators carried placards with inscriptions such as “Red Card Obasa, O to ge (It is enough)” and “Tinubu, rescue us”, calling for an end to what they described as years of political domination and marginalization.

Addressing journalists during the demonstration, Kamardeen Sabitu, Chairman of the PCC for Agege and Orile-Agege, accused Obasa of “tightening his grip on local politics for personal gain.”

“There is no true democracy in Agege. Since 2018, we’ve been resisting political imposition and manipulation. One person cannot continue to dominate Agege politics,” Sabitu said.

He stressed that while the group remains loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership, they would not tolerate imposed candidates or undemocratic practices.

Azeez’s sudden exit now adds another layer to the unfolding political drama in Agege, with observers watching closely to see how the local political balance shifts in the coming weeks.
