American singer and songwriter Brittany Porter, 30, has publicly demanded a “proper divorce” from former King of Malaysia, Sultan Muhammad V, 56 — claiming she was married to him in a religious ceremony she believed was merely a blessing.
Porter, who performs under the stage name Brook Lynn, said she met the former monarch in January 2024 through mutual friends. Their connection, she told the South China Morning Post, was “instant and magnetic,” marked by lavish travels and grand gestures.
“He was charming and generous,” she said, recalling how Muhammad V showered her with luxury gifts and extravagant trips across Asia. In April 2024, he proposed with a blue diamond ring, which she described as “a stone chosen to match my eyes.”
The relationship took an unexpected turn during a trip to Oman, where the pair participated in what Porter thought was a symbolic blessing ritual. It was later revealed to be an Islamic nikah, a legally binding marriage ceremony.
“I didn’t even realize I was officially married,” Porter said. “He told me it was a spiritual blessing, not a legal wedding.”
Following the ceremony, Porter claimed she was encouraged to have a son to “continue his royal lineage.” However, after suffering a miscarriage, their relationship began to deteriorate.
Determined to reconcile, Porter returned to the United States to plan a Western-style wedding, only to find that the former monarch had become increasingly distant — and eventually cut off all communication.
In a desperate attempt to confront him, she flew to Malaysia, then Singapore, where she discovered he was staying at the Four Seasons Hotel.
“I wasn’t allowed to see him. I even climbed the stairwell trying to reach his floor. It was not my proudest moment,” she admitted. “Later that night, he got on a plane and left. His butler texted me to apologize.”
Porter said Muhammad V later ended the relationship indirectly, sending word through a mutual friend that they were “separated.”
Now back in California, Porter has taken to social media to demand formal recognition of the marriage’s end.
“I was never given closure or accountability. I deserve a proper divorce and a sincere apology,” she wrote on Instagram.
Muhammad V, who served as Malaysia’s 15th King from 2016 to 2019, abdicated the throne in a historic resignation — the first in the country’s history. He later resumed his position as Sultan of Kelantan, one of Malaysia’s most conservative states.
The former monarch has been married three times, including a brief union with Russian beauty queen Oxana Voevodina, whom he wed in 2018 and divorced the following year.
