Police fix Aug. 12 to begin tinted glass permit enforcement - Realnews Magazine

As the August 12 deadline for tinted glass permit compliance draws closer, uncertainty and anxiety are mounting among vehicle owners across Nigeria. Despite the date being just days away, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue a clear directive on how enforcement will proceed, leaving many motorists unsure of what to expect.

The permit, required for vehicles with factory-fitted or aftermarket tinted windows, has long been a contentious issue. While security agencies argue it is necessary to curb criminal activities and enhance visibility during checks, motorists have often complained about cumbersome application processes, delays, and alleged extortion during enforcement.

In April, the police announced plans to fully resume enforcement of the regulation, giving motorists ample notice to obtain the required permit before August 12. However, as the deadline approaches, there has been no update on whether the enforcement will involve routine checks, spot fines, or impoundments—nor clarity on whether grace periods or exemptions will apply.

The silence has sparked mixed reactions. Some car owners have rushed to secure the permit to avoid potential run-ins with law enforcement, while others are holding back, hoping for clearer guidelines or a possible extension of the deadline.

Civil rights groups have also expressed concern, warning that lack of transparency could lead to harassment of motorists. They urge the police to communicate enforcement procedures publicly to prevent abuse and ensure fairness.

For now, Nigerians can only watch the clock tick toward August 12, uncertain if the day will bring business as usual or a nationwide crackdown on tinted glass violators. Until the police speak up, speculation—and anxiety—will continue to fill the gap.
