In a significant boost to educational development in Nigeria, leading fintech company OPay has extended its ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship initiative to students of a prominent university in Benue State. The move is part of the firm’s long-term commitment to empowering young Nigerians through access to quality education.

A Decade-Long Investment in Human Capital

The scholarship program, first launched by OPay to support underprivileged but academically talented students, is structured to run for a decade. With a financial commitment of ₦1.2 billion, the initiative aims to cover full tuition, accommodation, and living stipends for selected beneficiaries across multiple Nigerian universities.

By including a Benue-based institution in the latest phase of the rollout, OPay is expanding its reach beyond the traditional financial and commercial hubs into underserved regions, emphasizing inclusivity and equitable access to educational opportunities.

Bridging the Opportunity Gap

OPay’s Country Manager, speaking during the launch ceremony at the Benue university, noted that the initiative is designed to “bridge the opportunity gap for intelligent students who are held back by financial constraints.” He added that the company sees education as the foundation for national development and long-term economic sustainability.

“Benue has always been a land of potential,” he said. “We are proud to identify with its bright students and help shape a future where no dream is denied due to lack of funding.”

Selection and Scope

The scholarship is merit-based, with a focus on students from low-income backgrounds who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and community involvement. Beneficiaries will not only receive financial support but also access to mentorship opportunities, digital skills training, and potential internship placements within OPay and its partner networks.

University authorities expressed deep appreciation for the partnership, hailing it as a “life-changing intervention” that aligns with the institution’s mission of producing globally competitive graduates.

Positive Reception and Future Outlook

Students and parents alike have welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm. One recipient, a second-year engineering student, said: “This scholarship is a miracle. It takes away the stress of worrying about fees and lets me focus on my studies and future.”

With Benue now on the map, OPay hinted at plans to continue expanding the program to other regions, reinforcing its position as not just a digital financial services leader, but also a key player in national development and corporate social responsibility.
