Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark his final appearance on the global stage, signaling the nearing end of an extraordinary career spanning more than two decades.

The 40-year-old superstar, who currently plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, made the announcement on Tuesday during a live video session at a global tourism and investment forum hosted in Saudi Arabia.

“Definitely, yes. I’m going to be 41 years old, and I think it will be the moment,” Ronaldo said when asked whether the 2026 tournament would be his last.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has scored over 950 career goals for club and country, hinted that he could retire completely from professional football “in one or two years.”

Despite his age, Ronaldo insisted that he still feels physically sharp and mentally motivated.

“I feel very good at this moment. I’m scoring goals, and I still feel quick and sharp. I’m enjoying my game with the national team,” he said. “But let’s be honest — what I mean by soon is probably one or two years.”

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Ronaldo expressed immense pride in his accomplishments and gratitude for his longevity in football.

“I gave everything for football. I’ve been in the game for 25 years, achieved so many records, and played in different countries. I’m really proud — so now I just want to enjoy the moment,” he added.

Ronaldo also spoke fondly about his son, Cristiano Jr., who is currently part of Portugal’s Under-16 team.

“As a father, I just want him to be happy. I don’t want to pressure him. Whether he plays football or not, I’ll support him in whatever makes him fulfilled,” he said.

If selected, the 2026 World Cup — set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico — would be Ronaldo’s sixth and final appearance at football’s biggest competition. His closest attempt to lift the trophy came in 2006, when Portugal reached the semi-finals but lost to France.

Portugal, meanwhile, are just one win away from securing qualification for the 2026 tournament, with their decisive match against Ireland scheduled for Thursday.

Ronaldo’s confirmation has sparked emotional reactions from fans around the world, marking the beginning of the farewell chapter for one of football’s greatest icons.
