Landmark Shift in Labour Relations
In a major development, the Dangote Group has reportedly agreed to allow employees at its refinery and petrochemical plants to become members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG). The move marks a significant step in resolving the ongoing tensions between the company and oil workers’ unions.
MoU in the Works
Reliable sources disclosed that discussions between the two parties are at an advanced stage, with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) being drafted. The document, once signed, will formalize the agreement and set out clear terms for workers’ unionisation.
Timeline for Implementation
The parties are said to be considering a two-week window for the full implementation of the MoU. This would give Dangote staff the legal backing to freely associate with NUPENG and exercise their rights under labour law.
A Win for Workers’ Rights
The decision comes after intense pressure from both NUPENG and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), who had threatened to shut down the refinery if workers’ rights were ignored. Union leaders hailed the development as a victory for fairness and industrial justice.
Looking Ahead
If the agreement holds, it could set a precedent for improved labour relations within the Dangote Group and the wider oil and gas industry. Stakeholders now await the formal signing of the MoU and the practical steps toward implementation in the coming weeks.
