Oborevwori Flags Off Kwale Free Trade Zone, Opens New Chapter for Delta's Economy

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially launched the Kwale Free Trade Zone (KFTZ) in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, marking a pivotal step in the state’s push for economic diversification and industrial development. The zone is part of the broader Delta Special Economic Zone Project, aimed at transforming the state into a hub for sustainable industries beyond oil.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the governor said the project represents more than infrastructure — it embodies a vision for long-term prosperity and innovation.

“This is not just another project launch. Today, we lay the foundation for a Delta where technology, industry, and innovation will thrive, creating opportunities for generations to come,” Oborevwori stated.

The KFTZ is set to serve as a strategic center for energy, petrochemicals, agro-processing, logistics, and manufacturing, leveraging Kwale’s rich gas reserves and strategic location. Already, eight companies have expressed interest in establishing operations in the zone, with two fully licensed, three awaiting approvals, and three in advanced stages of regulatory processing.

The governor also confirmed that the state government has invested over ₦3 billion in Delta Wires Industries, the first company to commence operations in the zone.

Former Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, who chaired the event, praised Oborevwori for building on initiatives from his administration and urged host communities to support the project, including providing additional land for future expansion.

Brig. Gen. Mike Ndubisi (rtd), Chairman of the Delta Special Economic Zone Management Company, called the launch “a major milestone in Delta’s industrial evolution,” while Managing Director Pastor Godwin Akpovie disclosed that more than $100 million has already been committed to the Kwale and Koko clusters.

“We are creating jobs, fostering innovation, and proving that Delta can lead in industrial development. This is not just about factories — it’s about a brighter future for all Deltans,” Ndubisi said.

Beyond the Free Trade Zone, Governor Oborevwori urged the federal government to establish a coherent framework for a globally competitive automotive industry, noting that policy gaps and lack of legislative support have hindered Nigeria’s industrial growth and youth empowerment.

Last month in Asaba, during a four-day retreat for members of the House of Representatives Committee on Industry, the governor highlighted the need for local vehicle production and investment in human capital, under the theme: “Building a Globally Competitive Automotive Sector in Nigeria through Effective Executive–Legislative Partnership.”

The launch of the Kwale Free Trade Zone marks a defining moment in Oborevwori’s “MORE Agenda,” signaling Delta State’s determination to lead in industrialization, job creation, and economic diversification.
