EFCC Detains Sujimoto CEO Over Alleged ₦5.7bn Enugu Smart School Scandal
The Chief Executive Officer of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, Sijibomi Ogundele, is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of diverting ₦5.7 billion released by the Enugu State Government for the construction of smart schools.
Ogundele, widely known as Sujimoto, surrendered to the EFCC on Monday, September 8, after being declared wanted last week for allegedly refusing to honour multiple invitations from the anti-graft agency.
According to the Enugu State Government, Sujimoto’s company abandoned the awarded projects despite receiving billions in payments. The government said attempts to obtain progress reports were ignored, leading to a formal petition to the EFCC.
Confirming the development, an EFCC insider revealed that Ogundele was grilled for over 10 hours in Abuja.
“The CEO of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited turned himself in and has been cooperating with investigators. We have frozen his personal and company accounts, and his passport has been seized to restrict his movement pending further investigation,” the source said.
The property developer had earlier released a video denying the allegations, describing them as false and insisting that he was not a thief. He also pledged to appear before the EFCC to clear his name.
As of Monday night, it was still uncertain whether Ogundele had been released on bail.
