Flutterwave has obtained a banking licence from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), marking a major milestone for the African fintech giant as it expands beyond payment services into broader financial offerings.

The new approval allows the company to operate more directly within Nigeria’s financial system and provide a wider range of services to businesses and customers across the country and beyond. The development comes after Flutterwave processed more than $40 billion in lifetime transactions, highlighting its growing influence in Africa’s fintech space.

According to the company, the licence will enable it to improve payment settlement efficiency, strengthen infrastructure, and introduce new banking-style solutions for merchants and consumers. The move also positions Flutterwave to compete more directly with traditional banks and digital financial institutions in Nigeria.

Flutterwave, founded in 2016, has grown into one of Africa’s leading fintech companies, providing payment services across more than 30 countries. The firm has also accumulated numerous regulatory approvals globally as part of its expansion strategy.

Industry analysts say the banking licence could accelerate financial inclusion, deepen digital payments, and reshape Nigeria’s evolving fintech landscape.
