The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to motorists, including drivers of security and government vehicles, against driving against traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, following the start of repair works on the Kara Bridge section.
The Federal Ministry of Works had announced a six-week partial closure of the expressway to repair expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge. The closure aims to resume critical rehabilitation works previously suspended on the Lagos-bound side of Kara Bridge due to public complaints about prolonged traffic congestion.
FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, Kehinde Hamzat, noted that the repair works—which are expected to last at least two months—have already caused traffic build-up around Kara Bridge. Two expansion joints are being repaired simultaneously using fast-curing materials to accelerate the process.
Hamzat condemned reports of some government and security vehicles flouting traffic rules, describing such actions as an abuse of office. He explained that penalties imposed by the violators’ agencies are often harsher than those imposed by the FRSC itself.
The FRSC emphasized that damaged sections of the highway had contributed to several crashes, particularly as motorists tried to evade oncoming traffic. Overloading was also highlighted as a key factor in road deterioration, with weighbridges set to monitor and curb the practice.
To enforce compliance, FRSC personnel, alongside the Nigerian Police and Army, have been strategically deployed along the corridor. Several motorists attempting to drive against traffic have already been arrested.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, apologized to commuters for the inconvenience and assured the public that improved traffic management measures would accompany the repairs. He added that the expansion joints had deteriorated significantly, posing safety risks and contributing to accidents, prompting Minister of Works David Umahi to order urgent rehabilitation.
Motorists have been urged to exercise patience during the temporary disruptions to ensure safety and a smoother repair process.
