UEFA has handed a provisional one-match suspension to Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni following allegations that he directed discriminatory language at Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior during last week’s Champions League clash.

The incident is said to have occurred during the first-leg encounter between Benfica and Real Madrid on February 17, 2026, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the Spanish side. Vinícius reportedly accused Prestianni of making a racist remark after he celebrated his goal near the Benfica corner flag.

Investigation Underway

UEFA confirmed that an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector (EDI) has been appointed to investigate the matter. Acting on an interim report, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) imposed the provisional suspension, ruling that there was a prima facie case of a potential breach of Article 14 of UEFA’s Disciplinary Regulations, which addresses discriminatory conduct.

As a result, Prestianni will miss the second leg of the tie while the investigation continues.

Conflicting Claims

According to reports, Prestianni acknowledged using an offensive slur but allegedly claimed it was homophobic rather than racist in nature. However, Vinícius maintained that the comment directed at him was racially abusive. Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé also reportedly stated that he heard the remark during the confrontation.

UEFA clarified that the suspension is temporary and does not pre-judge the outcome of the full disciplinary process.

Possible Sanctions

If found guilty of racial abuse under UEFA’s regulations, Prestianni could face a ban of up to 10 matches in UEFA competitions. Further details are expected once the investigation is concluded and a final ruling is delivered.

The case adds to ongoing concerns about discriminatory behaviour in European football, with governing bodies under increasing pressure to take firm action against racism and other forms of abuse on the pitch.
