Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced the launch of a large-scale youth recruitment programme aimed at tackling unemployment and empowering young people across the state. The initiative, described as one of the most ambitious in recent years, is expected to provide thousands of job opportunities for Edo youths in both the public and private sectors.

Speaking during the official unveiling in Benin City, Governor Okpebholo said the recruitment drive was part of his administration’s broader plan to stimulate economic growth, reduce crime rates, and harness the untapped potential of the state’s young population. “Edo’s greatest resource is its people, and our youths are the heartbeat of our development agenda. This initiative is about giving them a platform to work, learn, and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.

The programme will focus on creating jobs in key sectors such as agriculture, technology, education, healthcare, and public works. According to the governor, priority will be given to skill acquisition and capacity building, ensuring that beneficiaries are equipped to excel in their new roles and sustain themselves in the long term.

Applications for the recruitment will be processed through a transparent, merit-based system, with an online portal to be launched in the coming days. The state government also plans to partner with private companies, vocational centres, and international development agencies to expand the scope and reach of the programme.

Stakeholders, including youth groups and community leaders, have praised the governor’s move as a timely intervention in the face of rising unemployment rates in the state. Many expressed optimism that the initiative would not only provide immediate relief to job seekers but also strengthen Edo’s economy through increased productivity and innovation.

Governor Okpebholo assured that this was only the beginning, hinting at more employment and empowerment programmes to be rolled out before the end of the year. “We are committed to building an Edo where no youth is left behind,” he affirmed.
