The political atmosphere in Nigeria is heating up once again as speculation mounts over a possible comeback by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan ahead of the 2027 general elections. A trusted ally of the former leader has hinted strongly at Jonathan’s readiness to throw his hat back into the ring—setting the stage for what could be one of the most dramatic political comebacks in Nigeria’s democratic history.

The unnamed close associate, reportedly privy to ongoing high-level discussions, revealed that the former president is “seriously considering” a return to Aso Rock, having received strong encouragement from powerful domestic and international stakeholders who believe his return could help stabilize the country.

According to the source, Jonathan has grown increasingly concerned about Nigeria’s current political trajectory, economic turbulence, and national unity, prompting him to rethink retirement from frontline politics.

“He has been silent for a while, but don’t mistake that for indifference. The truth is, Dr. Jonathan is watching closely, consulting widely, and is very open to returning — if the conditions are right,” the ally stated.

How True Is This?

While no official declaration has come from Jonathan himself, the political rumor mill has been abuzz in recent months with whispers of his return. Some political observers point to his increasing public appearances, international engagements, and closed-door meetings with key political figures as signs that something is brewing behind the scenes.

Jonathan, who led Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, remains a respected figure both at home and abroad. His peaceful handover of power in 2015 earned him international acclaim and the image of a statesman. However, any attempt to stage a comeback would be both unprecedented and controversial, especially given that he had previously distanced himself from re-election talks.

Legal and Political Hurdles

Constitutionally, Jonathan is eligible to run again since he served only one full term. However, the political landscape has shifted significantly since his exit, and he would need to navigate complex party dynamics, especially within the All Progressives Congress (APC), which reportedly courted him in the lead-up to the 2023 elections.

It is also unclear under which party Jonathan would run if he decides to contest in 2027. While he rose to power under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rumors persist that some APC power brokers still view him as a potential consensus candidate if internal zoning and regional balancing become contentious.

What This Means for 2027

If Jonathan enters the race, it would dramatically alter the political landscape. His experience, name recognition, and appeal in both the South-South and parts of the North could split votes and challenge the ambitions of emerging candidates from both major parties.

Still, many analysts remain cautious, insisting that until Jonathan himself makes a clear public statement, the reports should be treated with a mix of curiosity and skepticism.

“Politics is fluid, especially in Nigeria. Jonathan may be exploring his options or simply being courted by interest groups,” a political analyst noted. “But until he speaks, it remains speculation.”

As the road to 2027 begins to take shape, all eyes will remain on the former president to see if he will once again step into the political spotlight — or remain the elder statesman many believe he has become.
