The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspect linked to a criminal operation that used a fake job interview to lure victims into a robbery trap in the Magodo area of Lagos.
The incident, now under investigation, reportedly involved unsuspecting job seekers who responded to what appeared to be a legitimate recruitment exercise held at a hotel venue.
Recruitment Setup Used as Trap
According to accounts shared by one of the victims online, the interview environment initially appeared genuine, with a well-arranged setting and refreshments provided to applicants.
However, the situation changed abruptly when candidates were asked to step outside briefly. On their return, they discovered that their personal belongings—including mobile phones, cash, and other valuables—had been stolen.
The deceptive operation reportedly left several applicants stranded and shocked, as the supposed recruitment team vanished with their items.
Police Action and Investigation
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Police Command said the matter was reported on April 9, 2026, and is currently under active investigation.
Authorities disclosed that one suspect has already been arrested in connection with the case, while efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the gang who fled after the incident.
Police said the arrested suspect is assisting with investigations aimed at dismantling the network behind the scheme.
Public Advisory Issued
The command also urged residents, especially job seekers, to exercise caution when responding to online job offers and recruitment invitations.
It advised members of the public to verify job openings through official channels and avoid attending interviews that lack credible or traceable company details.
Rising Concern Over Recruitment Scams
The incident highlights growing concerns over the use of fake employment opportunities by criminal groups to target vulnerable job seekers in major cities.
Police say investigations are ongoing, with efforts focused on recovering stolen items and bringing all suspects involved to justice.
