Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has confirmed September 26, 2025, as the date for the coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, following a meeting with former governor and Ibadan high chief, Rashidi Ladoja.

The governor, who paid a courtesy visit to Ladoja at his residence in Bodija, Ibadan, on Thursday, said the state government was fully prepared to give the historic installation the grandeur it deserves. He emphasized that the coronation of the Olubadan is not only a cultural milestone for Ibadanland but also a moment of pride for Oyo State and Yorubaland at large.

Makinde noted that his administration would ensure a hitch-free and memorable ceremony befitting the revered throne. He also praised Chief Ladoja for his continued support in preserving the traditions of the Ibadan chieftaincy system, which remains one of the most orderly and respected succession models in Nigeria.

“We have agreed that September 26 will be the date of coronation for the Olubadan. This is a significant event for our people, and the government will work with the Olubadan-in-Council, traditional institutions, and stakeholders to make it a success,” Makinde said.

The governor further assured Ibadan residents that adequate security, logistics, and infrastructure support would be put in place ahead of the event, which is expected to attract dignitaries from across the country and beyond.

Chief Ladoja, in his remarks, expressed delight at the governor’s visit and welcomed the chosen date, stressing that the coronation would once again showcase Ibadan’s unity, heritage, and rich cultural identity.

The Olubadan stool, regarded as one of the most prestigious in Yorubaland, became vacant earlier this year, paving the way for the emergence of the new monarch through Ibadan’s unique rotational succession system.

With the date now officially set, all eyes are on Ibadan as the ancient city prepares to celebrate the ascension of its new traditional ruler.
