Netflix has officially discontinued support for its streaming service on Sony’s PlayStation 3 as of March 2, 2026, bringing to a close nearly two decades of compatibility with the iconic gaming console.
Users of the PlayStation 3 reportedly received notifications informing them that Netflix would no longer function on the device. The message advised customers to visit Netflix’s official website to check for a list of currently supported devices.
End of the Road for a 20-Year-Old Console
The PlayStation 3, originally launched in November 2006, sold more than 87 million units globally and played a major role in transforming gaming consoles into full multimedia entertainment systems. It became one of the earliest consoles to support Netflix streaming, helping popularise home streaming long before smart TVs and modern streaming devices became widespread.
However, as technology has advanced, maintaining support for older hardware has become increasingly difficult due to outdated software, hardware limitations, and evolving security requirements.
Users React With Nostalgia and Disappointment
The decision has sparked emotional reactions from longtime users, many of whom described the move as the “end of an era.”
Some users noted that the PlayStation 3 remained their primary streaming device due to its reliability and simplicity. Others said it allowed family members in different countries to access Netflix without restrictions tied to newer devices.
Social media platforms and online forums were filled with nostalgic tributes, highlighting the console’s role in both gaming and streaming history.
Other Older Devices Also Losing Support
The PlayStation 3 is not alone in losing Netflix access. Reports indicate that several older smart TVs—particularly those over a decade old—as well as certain legacy set-top boxes, will also no longer support the streaming platform.
These changes reflect Netflix’s ongoing shift toward newer, more secure, and technically capable devices that can handle modern streaming standards.
Alternative Ways to Watch Netflix
Despite the change, Netflix remains widely accessible across many devices, including:
-
Smart TVs
-
Smartphones
-
Tablets
-
Modern gaming consoles such as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox models
-
Streaming devices like Fire TV Stick, Roku, and Apple TV
-
Computers via web browsers
The company says the move is part of its effort to ensure optimal performance, improved security, and better viewing experiences for users.
For many longtime PlayStation 3 owners, however, the shutdown represents the closing chapter of a device that helped define the early years of streaming entertainment.
