U.S. President Donald Trump intensified his criticism of Nigeria on Friday night, November 21, describing the country as “a disgrace” while accusing the government of failing to curb extremist violence against Christian communities.

Speaking during an appearance on a conservative radio program, Trump doubled down on previous claims that Nigeria’s leadership is not doing enough to protect citizens from Islamist militants. He again hinted at possible U.S. military intervention if Abuja does not “do more” to address ongoing attacks.

“Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace,” Trump declared. “They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide, and I’m really angry about it. And we pay, you know, we give a lot of subsidies to Nigeria. We’re going to end up stopping.”

The president’s remarks echo a narrative frequently promoted within right-wing U.S. political circles — that Christians in Nigeria are uniquely targeted by extremist groups. However, analysts note that Nigeria’s insecurity landscape is far more complex, with both Christians and Muslims suffering mass casualties over the years due to terrorism, banditry, and communal violence.

Trump’s latest comments are expected to spark fresh diplomatic reactions and may further strain U.S.–Nigeria relations at a time when both countries are navigating sensitive security and economic partnerships.
