The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, the charismatic founder and leader of the iconic Shuga Band. He died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 50.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Monday, November 3, describing him as a “custodian of rhythm, culture, and performance.”

“He was a custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance. Across more than three decades of excellence—on stage and in mentorship—he redefined what it meant to lead a band with grace, mastery, and purpose,” the statement read.

“To countless admirers at home and abroad, he was both an inspiration and an institution: a true king in his art. As the family comes to terms with this immeasurable loss, we humbly request privacy and quiet reflection at this deeply difficult time.”

The family added that details of memorial arrangements and funeral plans will be announced later.

Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga’s life story was one of courage, perseverance, and extraordinary talent. Stricken by polio at the age of five, he defied physical limitations to become one of Nigeria’s most respected live performers and music entrepreneurs.

His resilience and artistry transformed him into a symbol of hope and determination, inspiring countless Nigerians living with disabilities to pursue their dreams.

In 1998, Akiin founded the Shuga Band, which quickly rose to fame for its electrifying performances at major corporate events, weddings, and high-profile state functions. The band became synonymous with class, versatility, and musical excellence—setting a new standard for live entertainment in Nigeria.

Over the years, Akiin Shuga earned recognition not only for his musical brilliance but also for his humanitarian work, particularly his advocacy for people with disabilities. Through the Akiin Shuga Foundation, he championed causes centered on inclusion, empowerment, and equal opportunity, using his own life as proof that disability is not inability.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the Nigerian music and entertainment community, with colleagues describing him as “a musical genius,” “a gentleman with a golden heart,” and “a true ambassador of live music.”

Akiin Shuga’s enduring legacy will live on through the melodies, mentorship, and memories he left behind.

May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
