Google unveils AI skills training for public servants - Vanguard News

The Federal Government has entered into a strategic partnership with Google to equip Nigerian public servants with artificial intelligence (AI) skills, positioning the civil service for the demands of a digital future.

Announced in Abuja on Thursday, the initiative introduces the Apolitical Government AI Campus to Nigeria — a platform designed to provide civil servants with practical AI training, tools, and global best practices.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the programme as a turning point in government efficiency. “We are determined to make AI second nature to our civil servants. It will shorten administrative processes and enable better service delivery to Nigerians,” he said.

Google’s West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, explained that the project reflects Google’s commitment to Nigeria’s digital transformation. “By empowering those who design and deliver public services, we are investing directly in the future of governance,” he said, adding that AI could unlock smarter solutions, more inclusive services, and stronger social outcomes for communities.

Chris Ferguson, Vice President at Apolitical, noted that structured upskilling is vital for AI adoption in government. He said the Campus would not only offer technical resources but also foster a community of global peers who share insights and solutions for AI in governance.

Google highlighted that the programme is part of its broader investment in Nigeria’s digital growth — including internet expansion, support for AI hubs, and digital education. Research shows that every $1 invested in AI could return more than $8 to the economy, making the training a potential catalyst for national development.

Through this collaboration, Nigerian public servants will have access to government-focused online training modules ranging from AI basics to leadership applications, alongside live expert sessions and frameworks to integrate AI into daily operations.
