The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather advisory warning of widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across several parts of the country, beginning Monday and expected to last for three days.
According to the forecast, the weather conditions may affect both northern and southern regions, bringing light to intense thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and strong winds, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. NiMet advised residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions to avoid weather-related incidents such as flooding, traffic disruptions, and power outages.
The agency’s statement reads:
“From Monday through Wednesday, there will be significant weather activities including thunderstorms, rainfall, and possible lightning strikes in various states. The northern states may experience early morning rains, while coastal and inland areas of the South should prepare for late afternoon and evening thunderstorms.”
States likely to be affected include Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Abuja, Kaduna, Niger, Taraba, Borno, Bauchi, and parts of the Middle Belt. Some areas may experience localized flooding, particularly in urban centers with poor drainage systems.
NiMet also warned farmers, aviation operators, and road users to stay alert and monitor daily forecasts, as the adverse weather may affect flight schedules, transportation safety, and agricultural activities.
Residents are urged to clear blocked drainage channels, avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, and secure outdoor property that could be damaged by wind gusts.
This warning follows an earlier seasonal rainfall prediction by NiMet indicating above-average precipitation in some regions and a potential for flash flooding during peak rainy months. The agency emphasized the need for early preparedness and community-level awareness to minimize risks.
As Nigeria moves deeper into the rainy season, NiMet reassures the public that it will continue to provide regular weather updates to help citizens and stakeholders make informed decisions.
