The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has stepped down from her role following a directive from Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring cabinet members intending to contest elective offices in 2027 to resign.
Onyejeocha announced her resignation on Friday through a statement shared on her social media pages, just days after the March 31 deadline issued by the presidency. However, she did not reveal the specific position she plans to seek in the upcoming elections.
In her message, the former minister expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve, describing her time in office as a meaningful chapter in her public service career.
“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I announce my resignation as Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment,” she stated, while thanking President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in her.
She also acknowledged members of the Federal Executive Council, ministry staff, and Nigerians for their cooperation and support during her tenure. Onyejeocha noted that her time in office focused on improving workers’ welfare, strengthening workplace safety, and promoting job creation initiatives.
The former lawmaker, who represented the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2023, also expressed appreciation to her constituents for their continued support throughout her political journey.
Describing her resignation as the beginning of a new phase, she reaffirmed her commitment to national development and public service.
Her exit makes her the third cabinet member to step down in preparation for the 2027 elections. Earlier, Said Alkali resigned as Minister of Transportation to pursue the governorship of Gombe State, while Yusuf Tuggar also stepped down as Minister of Foreign Affairs to join the Bauchi State governorship race.
