Supporters and close allies of Labour Party leader Peter Obi have made it clear that he will not accept a secondary role in any political arrangement ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to figures within Obi’s political circle, the former Anambra State governor is focused solely on contesting for the presidency, ruling out any possibility of serving as a vice-presidential candidate under another flag bearer.
They described any speculation about Obi settling for a running-mate position as misplaced, stressing that his political ambition remains firmly fixed on leading the country rather than playing a supporting role.
‘No Room for Compromise’
Sources aligned with the Obi movement said the position reflects the expectations of his core supporters, who believe his political capital, nationwide followership, and performance in the last election place him squarely in contention for the highest office.
One insider said discussions within the camp have drawn a clear boundary ahead of coalition talks, adding that Obi’s participation in 2027 will be strictly on presidential terms.
Coalition Talks Under Scrutiny
With opposition parties exploring alliances to challenge the ruling party, Obi’s stance is expected to shape negotiations significantly. Analysts say ruling out a vice-presidential role could either strengthen his bargaining power or complicate efforts to build a broad opposition front.
Supporters, however, argue that clarity at this stage prevents confusion and reinforces confidence among voters who see Obi as a presidential figure rather than a political accessory.
Eyes on 2027
While Obi has yet to make a formal declaration, his camp’s message signals a firm direction as political maneuvering intensifies ahead of the next election cycle.
For now, the message from his inner circle is unambiguous: it is the presidency or nothing.
