Former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, held a private meeting in Abuja on Thursday to deliberate on pressing national issues.
Obi, who announced the engagement via his official X handle, described Jonathan as an “elder brother and statesman,” noting that their conversation centered on the current challenges facing Nigeria and the need for collective solutions.
“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi stated.
While details of the meeting remain confidential, political observers believe the dialogue could be part of broader consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, given Obi’s rising profile as an opposition figure.
Jonathan, who has in recent years positioned himself as a peace broker across Africa, is seen as a unifying figure in Nigeria’s often polarized political landscape. His engagement with Obi is expected to fuel speculation about possible political realignments in the coming months.
Both men, however, emphasized the importance of dialogue and collaboration in navigating Nigeria’s socio-economic and political challenges.
