In a bold move to support the workforce and ease the rising cost of living, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced an increase in the state’s minimum wage from N70,000 to N75,000. The announcement was made during the May Day celebrations held in Benin City, where workers from various sectors gathered to mark International Workers’ Day.

Governor Okpebholo praised the contributions of Edo workers to the state’s development, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to their welfare and dignity. He noted that the wage increase was a demonstration of his government’s recognition of the economic realities facing Nigerian workers and its resolve to provide sustainable support.

“We understand the economic challenges being faced by our people, and this adjustment is part of our broader strategy to uplift the standard of living for workers in Edo,” Okpebholo stated.

Labour leaders at the event welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm, describing it as a timely intervention that would help workers better cope with inflation and rising living costs. Many hailed the governor’s decision as a progressive step that sets a positive example for other states to follow.

The wage increase, effective immediately, positions Edo State among the few Nigerian states offering one of the highest minimum wages in the country, reflecting Okpebholo’s pro-worker stance and commitment to economic justice.

As the celebration of May Day continued, workers expressed renewed hope in the state government’s promise of inclusive growth and support for the labor force.
