Ibadan, the political and cultural capital of Oyo State, has been thrown into a state of mourning following the death of its revered traditional ruler, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. The nonagenarian monarch passed away at the age of 90 after a brief period of ill health, marking the end of a reign defined by humility, stability, and deep-rooted respect for tradition.

Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne after the passing of Oba Saliu Adetunji in 2022, brought grace and wisdom to the Olubadan stool. A respected elder with a long-standing history in the Ibadan traditional hierarchy, his leadership was a continuation of the city’s orderly chieftaincy system, which has become a model of royal succession in Nigeria. His death, though not entirely unexpected due to his age and recent health challenges, has drawn widespread grief across Yoruba land and among the people of Ibadan, who hold their monarchy in deep esteem.

As is customary in Ibadan’s unique traditional system, the succession process swiftly followed. Rising from the highly respected Otun Olubadan line, former governor of Oyo State and one of Nigeria’s notable political figures, Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has now officially stepped in as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. His ascension is not only historically significant but also symbolic, bridging the worlds of politics and traditional leadership in a city known for producing prominent national leaders.

Senator Ladoja’s elevation is a landmark moment in Ibadan’s storied royal lineage. A trained engineer, accomplished businessman, and former governor of Oyo State (2003–2007), Ladoja has long been involved in the affairs of Ibadan both in public service and within the traditional council. His journey to the throne followed decades of patient progression through the civil line of the Ibadan chieftaincy system, a path marked by dedication, political wisdom, and traditional loyalty.

Governor Seyi Makinde has officially confirmed Oba Olakulehin’s passing and expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s death. In the same breath, he extended congratulations to Oba Ladoja, describing him as a worthy successor whose leadership will no doubt bring unity, wisdom, and renewed development to Ibadanland. “The crown has fallen but has now risen again on a man of experience, integrity, and unwavering love for Ibadan,” the governor remarked.

Across the city, condolences and tributes continue to pour in for Oba Olakulehin, with traditional leaders, religious clerics, political figures, and citizens celebrating his legacy. Plans are underway to accord the late monarch a befitting burial in line with the customs of the Olubadan-in-Council.

Meanwhile, preparations are ongoing for the formal coronation of Oba Ladoja. His reign is anticipated with great optimism, as many believe his political maturity, administrative experience, and passion for Ibadan will bring a new wave of unity and progressive leadership to the Olubadan institution.

With Oba Ladoja now seated as the 44th Olubadan, a new chapter begins in the ever-evolving story of Ibadan, blending time-honored tradition with the wisdom of modern leadership.
