Oil Workers Close Ranks
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has declared its full support for the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) in their standoff with the management of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Both unions warned that if their demands are ignored, they will not hesitate to halt operations at the multi-billion-dollar facility.
Labour Demands Respect for Workers’ Rights
According to PENGASSAN, the conflict stems from alleged unfair labour practices, including disregard for unionisation rights, poor welfare conditions, and non-compliance with labour laws at the refinery. The union insisted that no company, regardless of its size or influence, should be exempted from respecting the rights of Nigerian workers.
Strike Action on the Horizon
The oil workers’ threat comes at a sensitive time, as the Dangote Refinery — considered a key project for Nigeria’s energy independence — is still ramping up operations. A shutdown could disrupt fuel supply and further worsen the already fragile energy situation in the country.
Government Urged to Intervene
PENGASSAN called on the Federal Government and relevant regulatory agencies to step in immediately to prevent the looming crisis. The union stressed that dialogue and adherence to labour standards remain the only way to avoid a strike that could cripple the nation’s oil and gas industry.
A Brewing Showdown
With NUPENG and PENGASSAN standing firmly together, the stakes are high. Both unions represent a major force in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, and their united front signals a looming showdown that could have serious economic consequences if the dispute is not resolved swiftly.
