In a move that stirred widespread speculation across Nigeria’s political and social spaces, former presidential candidate and Labour Party chieftain, Peter Obi, has publicly addressed his conspicuous absence at the state funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari, offering a detailed and heartfelt explanation.

Obi, known for his calm demeanor and often principled approach to politics, issued a carefully worded statement on Tuesday evening, after days of silence, to clear the air surrounding his absence from the historic event that drew global dignitaries, national leaders, and former heads of state.

“It Was a Moment for the Nation, Not for Politics”

According to Obi, his decision to stay away from Buhari’s funeral was a deliberate and personal choice, grounded in respect, national interest, and a desire not to politicize the solemn occasion.

“The burial of any leader, especially a former Head of State, is a deeply sacred and national moment. I believed my physical presence might be misinterpreted, politicized, or even create unnecessary distractions at a time when the nation needed to grieve in unity,” Obi explained.

He further emphasized that his absence was not out of disrespect for the late president or his legacy but rather a quiet reflection on the state of the country and the importance of moving beyond optics to national healing.

“In mourning, we must seek genuine introspection—not just ceremonies. I used the day to reflect and pray for Nigeria’s future, for President Buhari’s soul, and for the strength of those he left behind,” Obi added.

A Calm Response to Growing Speculation

Obi’s absence had quickly become a trending topic, with critics and supporters speculating on everything from political rifts to ideological differences as possible reasons for the no-show. His explanation appears to have calmed tensions, especially among Labour Party loyalists who defended his right to mourn in his own way.

Some APC supporters, however, viewed the absence as a missed opportunity for national unity, especially given the symbolic weight of President Tinubu and other opposition leaders putting differences aside during the funeral ceremonies in Abuja and Daura.

In response to those criticisms, Obi said:

“Respect for the dead does not always need a camera. I chose silence over symbolism. And I believe, in my heart, that the late President understands.”

Obi’s Relationship with Buhari

Though Peter Obi and Muhammadu Buhari were on opposite sides of Nigeria’s political spectrum, Obi has repeatedly acknowledged Buhari’s contributions to national infrastructure, anti-corruption advocacy, and public service, while also being one of the former president’s fiercest critics on issues of economic mismanagement, insecurity, and rising poverty during his administration.

Political observers recall that Obi often clashed ideologically with Buhari’s economic policies, especially during the 2023 presidential election campaign, where he positioned himself as a technocrat seeking to rescue Nigeria from what he called “eight years of economic regression.” Yet, in his latest remarks, Obi struck a tone of reconciliation.

“History will judge all of us. What matters most is what we did with the power we held. I may have disagreed with President Buhari’s methods, but I never doubted his sincerity in wanting what he believed was best for Nigeria.”

Nigerians React

Public reaction to Obi’s explanation has been mixed. Many Nigerians, particularly youths who supported his presidential run, praised his approach as mature, principled, and devoid of political theatre.

“He doesn’t follow the crowd. That’s what makes Peter Obi different,” said Ayomide Olaniyi, a university student in Lagos. “He chose reflection over rhetoric, and that says a lot.”

Others felt the former Anambra governor could have made a national statement by attending, even if briefly. “It would have sent a stronger message of national unity, especially to his critics,” said Ibrahim Ahmed, a political commentator in Kaduna.

Looking Ahead

As Nigeria continues to mourn the passing of one of its former leaders, Peter Obi’s words have added a layer of thoughtful reflection to the national discourse. His choice to grieve away from the cameras and crowds, though controversial to some, is consistent with the image he has cultivated—a leader who prefers substance over showmanship.

Whether this decision helps or hurts his long-term political relevance remains to be seen, but in the eyes of his supporters, it has once again shown the depth of his convictions and his refusal to play politics with grief.
