Viral video: Pastor Adefarasin turns himself in to police - Vanguard News

The Lagos State Police Command has officially cleared Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, of any wrongdoing following widespread controversy over a viral video that appeared to show him holding a weapon-like object from his vehicle.

The incident, which occurred on June 6, 2025, quickly circulated across social media platforms, sparking debates and criticism from the public. In the short clip, Pastor Adefarasin was seen lowering the window of his tinted car while holding an object that resembled a firearm. The man recording the video could be heard nervously apologising before the car drove away.

Police Confirm Object Was a Stun Gun

In a statement issued on Wednesday, police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi clarified that the object in question was not a gun, but a stun gun — a non-lethal self-defense device.

“Following the incident wherein Pastor Paul Adefarasin turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in connection with a viral video showing him holding a gun-like object, the Command wishes to provide an update,” the statement read.

“After a thorough investigation, including interrogation and a cautionary statement from Pastor Adefarasin, it was established that the object in question was a stun gun and not a lethal weapon or firearm. Consequently, there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued.”

Pastor Adefarasin Denies Threat Allegations

Reacting to the controversy, Pastor Adefarasin publicly addressed the issue, denying claims that he was carrying or brandishing a firearm.

“You might be aware of a video circulating on social media showing me in what some have misunderstood as brandishing a firearm. I want to assure you that was certainly not a firearm, and at no point did I point such at anyone,” he said.

The pastor emphasised that the object was a protective device for personal safety, and insisted he did not intend to cause panic or intimidate anyone.

Social Media Reactions and Closure

The viral clip had fueled heated discussions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern about the growing trend of influential figures appearing with weapons in public spaces. Others defended the pastor, insisting he had a right to carry non-lethal protection, particularly given the country’s security challenges.

With the police clearing him of any criminal action, the matter appears to have been laid to rest. However, the episode has once again highlighted how quickly social media controversies can spiral into national debates — and how easily appearances can be misinterpreted without context.
