The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will recommence the nationwide enforcement of regulations governing the use of tinted vehicle glass from January 2, 2026, citing escalating security concerns linked to the abuse of unauthorised tinted windows.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin.
According to the police, the move follows a review of emerging security threats and is aimed at strengthening public safety, pending the final resolution of a related matter currently before the courts. The Force clarified that no court order exists restraining it from enforcing the law on tinted glass permits.
The statement explained that enforcement had previously been suspended in the interest of transparency and public convenience, allowing motorists adequate time to regularise their documents and complete the permit application process without undue pressure.
However, the police noted that recent security assessments have shown a rise in criminal activities involving vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Such vehicles, the Force said, are increasingly being used by criminals to conceal their identities while carrying out offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
In light of these developments, the police said the resumption of enforcement has become both necessary and urgent as a preventive measure to protect lives and property nationwide.
“Recent trends reveal a disturbing increase in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the statement said. “Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this loophole to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent acts.
“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive step to safeguard our communities. Consequently, enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit regulation will resume on January 2, 2026.”
Motorists have been advised to ensure full compliance with the law ahead of the enforcement date to avoid sanctions.
