The Olubadan-elect of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has described his ascension to the throne as a journey marked by trials, perseverance, and divine grace.

Speaking on Monday at his Bodija residence in Ibadan, the former governor of Oyo State recounted his more than three-decade-long progression through the traditional hierarchy of Ibadanland. Surrounded by a jubilant crowd of well-wishers, he admitted that the moment destiny called upon him was both humbling and unexpected.

“I never imagined I would be called to the throne at this time,” Oba Ladoja said emotionally, reflecting on the passing of his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. “His death was a shock. I thought he would reign for at least another five to ten years.”

Oba Ladoja’s journey began on October 1, 1993, when he was installed as Jagun Balogun Olubadan, the first step on the 36-rung Balogun line. Over the course of 31 years, he steadily climbed through the ranks — a process he described as rigorous but rewarding.

He recalled that many notable personalities were present when he first took up his chieftaincy title, including the late Chief MKO Abiola, the late Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, and several cultural leaders and politicians of the time.

Drawing attention to what he called “remarkable coincidences,” the Olubadan-elect noted: “I was born in 1944, and today I am the 44th Olubadan. This reminds me that God’s timing is always perfect. Many who began this journey with me are no longer alive, but I give thanks for the patience, perseverance, and grace that brought me here.”

Since returning from a two-month trip outside the state, Oba Ladoja has visited his ancestral home in Isale-Osi, Ibadan South-West, where his journey to the throne first began. He described the visit as “coming full circle,” a deeply spiritual moment of reflection and gratitude.

Paying tribute to the late Oba Olakulehin, he described him as “a monarch who upheld tradition with dignity,” while extending condolences to the late king’s family, the Olubadan-in-Council, and the people of Ibadan.

He also expressed gratitude to the Olubadan-in-Council for their unanimous endorsement of his nomination. “If they hadn’t approved, what could I do? I am grateful, and I promise that our unity and cooperation will only grow stronger.”

Looking ahead, the monarch-elect revealed that he would soon begin consultations with the Oyo State Governor, as well as key traditional figures including the Oluwo and the Araba of Ibadan, to finalise arrangements for his coronation.

Finally, Oba Ladoja appealed for the support of Ibadan sons and daughters across the world. “Pray for me,” he urged. “I ask for God’s wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to guide me. My greatest wish is that my reign will bring peace, prosperity, and progress to Ibadanland.”
