The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly opposed the impeachment process initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

Lawmakers of the State Assembly on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor, citing allegations of misconduct. However, the development has drawn sharp criticism from the APC leadership in the state, which described the move as destabilising and politically dangerous.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, the APC rejected the impeachment process, insisting that such action would further heighten political tension in the state.

“Our position remains clear: we categorically reject the resort to impeachment against the governor and his deputy,” Nwauju said. “It is unacceptable for unresolved internal disputes originating from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be allowed to spill over and destabilise the governance of Rivers State.”

The APC spokesperson stressed that the party would not remain silent while actions capable of undermining the state government are pursued, adding that Rivers State must not be plunged into further political uncertainty.

“We will do everything within the confines of the law to ensure that the government of Rivers State is not destabilised,” he added.

Meanwhile, the impeachment process moved forward earlier in the day as 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly signed a notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Governor Fubara. The notice was read during plenary by the Majority Leader, Major Jack, under the leadership of Speaker Martins Amaewhule.

Amaewhule announced that the notice would be formally served on the governor within seven days, in line with constitutional provisions.

Speaking during the proceedings, the Speaker launched a scathing attack on Governor Fubara, describing his administration as the worst in the state’s history. He accused the governor of failing to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill, claiming Rivers State was lagging behind other states in fiscal responsibility.

“Rivers State has never had it this bad,” Amaewhule said. “Across the entire country, Governor Fubara and his deputy are the only sub-national office holders yet to present a 2026 budget.”

The Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, also read a separate notice of allegations against Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, marking the formal commencement of impeachment proceedings against both officials.

The unfolding crisis has deepened political tensions in Rivers State, with stakeholders closely watching how the situation will evolve in the coming days.
