The VIP wing of the Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State, was on Friday filled with chants, banners, and jubilant songs as thousands of supporters gathered to welcome Governor Siminalayi Fubara back to the state.
Governor Fubara, who has been away from public office since the emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu, is expected to make a formal return to assume his duties. His anticipated arrival has sparked excitement among his loyalists, many of whom see the end of the emergency rule as a victory for democracy and the resilience of Rivers people.
Reports indicate that despite the Rivers State House of Assembly resuming plenary on Thursday, the governor was absent at the chambers, where a section of his supporters had already converged in anticipation of his appearance. Instead, the mood shifted to the airport, where an even larger crowd has positioned itself to give him a hero’s welcome.
Observers say today’s reception marks a significant political moment for Rivers State, as Fubara’s return could set the tone for the next phase of governance and stability in the oil-rich state. The governor is expected to make an address upon arrival, outlining his plans for reconciliation, rebuilding, and reuniting the state after weeks of tension.
