Ibadan was thrown into shock on Saturday as a raging fire gutted the Music House, a multi-million naira edifice owned by gospel singer and broadcaster, Dr. Yinka Ayefele. The building, which also houses Fresh FM 105.9, one of the most popular private radio stations in Oyo State, was badly affected by the inferno.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started in the early hours of the day, with thick smoke seen billowing from parts of the structure. Panic quickly spread among residents and staff members as emergency responders rushed to the scene to put the situation under control.
Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, initial reports suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault. Firefighters from the Oyo State Fire Service battled to contain the flames and prevent the destruction from spreading to nearby buildings.
The incident forced Fresh FM Ibadan temporarily off-air, leaving thousands of listeners stranded. Many fans of the station, who took to social media, expressed their shock and sadness over the development, describing the Music House as a cultural landmark in Ibadan.
Yinka Ayefele, who was seen at the scene of the incident, was visibly distraught as he addressed journalists. He expressed gratitude that no lives were lost, while lamenting the extent of damage to the building, which has served as both a media hub and a symbol of his life’s work.
The Music House, commissioned in 2012, is reputed to be one of the most sophisticated media and entertainment complexes in the region. It houses state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment, a recording studio, and office spaces for staff.
Sympathizers, including top government officials, musicians, and fans, have begun trooping to the scene to console Ayefele and his team. Meanwhile, the Oyo State government has promised to launch a full investigation into the cause of the fire.
For now, residents of Ibadan and lovers of Fresh FM across the state continue to hope for a swift recovery and restoration of the iconic station.
