The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued a strong warning of a possible nationwide strike following a disturbing rise in terrorist attacks and mass abductions targeting schools in Kebbi and Niger States.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday in Abuja on behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC), NUT National President Comrade Audu Titus Amba condemned the worsening insecurity and expressed deep outrage over the latest incidents.
Wave of Attacks Sparks Outcry
The union decried the killing of a vice principal and a security guard, as well as the abduction of 25 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State.
It also condemned the kidnapping of over 300 pupils and 12 staff members from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, Niger State.
“These grievous attacks are not only assaults on schools, teachers, and learners, but direct blows to the foundation of education and the sustainable development of our nation,” Amba said.
“Classrooms are meant to be sanctuaries for nurturing young minds. The destruction of these learning environments spells doom not just for our children, but for the nation as a whole.”
Union Warns of Looming Shutdown
The NUT noted that the repeated attacks have forced several schools to shut down, endangering the future of thousands of children. The union accused the government of failing to fully implement the Safe Schools Declaration and other security policies intended to protect educational institutions.
It called on federal and state governments to immediately secure the release of kidnapped students and staff, while strengthening security measures in vulnerable communities.
“The recent attacks are a tragic reminder that teachers and learners have become an endangered species, increasingly subjected to horrific attacks and kidnappings,” Amba added.
“If this deadly trend continues, the NUT will have no option but to call on all teachers nationwide to down tools and stay at home until their safety and security are guaranteed. Stop the attacks on our schools now.”
