The evening sky bled into shades of burnt orange as Amara stood on the same bridge where they had once talked about fate. Her fingers tightened around her phone, knowing she had to make the hardest call of her life.
“Dapo?” she said softly when he answered.
“Amara… I’ve missed you,” he breathed, his voice carrying that familiar warmth that had wrapped around her soul for months.
She closed her eyes, letting his voice wash over her one last time. “I miss you too. More than I can explain. But I can’t do this anymore.”
There was silence. Heavy. Unrelenting. “What are you saying?” His voice trembled.
“I’m saying… I love you enough to let you go.” The words cut her throat like glass. “You have a life that doesn’t include me. And I—” Her breath broke. “I deserve someone who can choose me. Completely. Without hesitation.”
Dapo’s exhale sounded like heartbreak. “Amara… You’re the piece I didn’t know was missing. You can’t just leave me in the dark again.”
Tears streamed down her face. “And yet, I have to. Because this kind of love? It will consume us. And we’ll never stop wanting more than the world will allow.”
She could hear him crying softly, and it shattered her. But she stayed strong.
“Promise me something,” she whispered. “Don’t forget this. Don’t forget me.”
“Forget you?” He laughed bitterly through tears. “You’re not someone anyone can forget. You’re a scar I’ll carry, and I’ll thank God for the pain because it means I knew you.”
Amara ended the call, dropping her phone onto the seat beside her as if it had burned her palm. She sat there, trembling, watching the last light of day fade into darkness. For the first time, she felt both free and hollow—a strange ache that would never completely heal.
She knew she’d go on with her life, meet someone new, maybe even smile again. But there would always be that space. That quiet, sacred place where Dapo’s voice still lingered, where his laughter still warmed the coldest corners of her heart.
Some loves are not meant to be understood, not meant to last—but they mark you forever.
