In a move aimed at immortalizing the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
The announcement, made during a national address commemorating a federal event in Borno State, was described by Tinubu as a “symbol of enduring respect and gratitude” to his predecessor for his commitment to education, national security, and northern development during his tenure as Nigeria’s president.
“President Muhammadu Buhari gave everything he had for Nigeria—especially in restoring peace to the Northeast and advancing the cause of education in conflict-affected areas,” Tinubu said. “Renaming this university in his honor is a fitting tribute to a man whose leadership helped stabilize Maiduguri and beyond.”
Founded in 1975, the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has played a critical role in advancing tertiary education in Nigeria’s North-East. Despite years of turmoil due to Boko Haram insurgency, the institution remained operational, a symbol of resilience and hope in the region. Under Buhari’s administration, federal support to the university was significantly increased, with new faculties established, and infrastructure funding channeled toward rebuilding efforts.
The renaming was met with mixed reactions across the country. Supporters of the move have hailed it as a well-deserved recognition of Buhari’s legacy, especially his focus on the revival of education in the face of terrorism and internal displacement. Northern elders, members of the academic community, and political allies of the former president welcomed the gesture.
Senator Kashim Shettima, Vice President and former Borno State governor, praised the renaming as “a historic act that will forever link Buhari’s name to a citadel of learning he helped protect and strengthen.”
However, some critics argue that such renaming should have involved broader consultation, particularly with stakeholders within the university community. Others raised concerns about setting a precedent for politicizing academic institutions by renaming them after living or recently retired political figures.
Despite the mixed sentiments, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to honoring national icons and upholding education as a vehicle for national transformation. He also hinted that additional recognitions could be given to other notable Nigerians who have contributed to peace, progress, and national unity.
The Federal Ministry of Education has been directed to begin the formal documentation and legal procedures to implement the name change. The University’s governing council, academic senate, and student bodies are expected to be part of the transition process.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with educational reform and regional development, the renaming of the University of Maiduguri signals both a tribute to the past and a challenge to future generations to uphold the ideals for which Muhammadu Buhari is being honored.
