The United States Mission in Nigeria has restated that visa application fees remain strictly non-refundable and non-transferable, regardless of whether an application is approved or denied.
The clarification came after increasing complaints from Nigerians who have described the U.S. visa process as financially burdensome, particularly when their applications are unsuccessful. Many applicants have taken to social media to highlight the high cost of the fees and the disappointment of losing the money after a rejection.
Embassy’s Position
In a post shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the U.S. Mission acknowledged the frustration felt by many Nigerians but explained that the policy aligns with global visa standards.
“We hear your concerns regarding U.S. visa application fees. Like most countries, U.S. visa fees cover the cost of processing the application, regardless of the outcome. While fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, each application is reviewed thoroughly and fairly. For best results, prepare your application carefully and use the resources on our website,” the Mission stated.
The Embassy emphasized that the money paid is not a guarantee of approval but a charge to cover administrative costs, including background checks, document verification, and interview logistics.
Nigerians React
For many Nigerian applicants, the policy has been met with mixed feelings. Some argue that the fee structure discourages genuine travelers who may not have the financial flexibility to reapply multiple times. Others have called for the introduction of a rollover or credit system that would allow unsuccessful applicants to reuse their payments for subsequent attempts.
Advice to Applicants
Despite the criticisms, the U.S. Mission urged Nigerians seeking visas to make use of the free guidance materials and application tips available on its official website. It advised applicants to prepare their documentation thoroughly, answer interview questions truthfully, and avoid errors that could lead to automatic denials.
