Popular social media activist, VeryDarkMan, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after spending five days in detention. His release was confirmed by his legal representatives on Tuesday, bringing an end to a period of uncertainty that sparked wide public attention and online campaigns demanding his freedom.
VeryDarkMan, whose real name is yet to be officially confirmed by authorities, is known for his outspoken views on social issues and his fearless critiques of corruption and societal vices in Nigeria. His arrest by the EFCC last week had drawn mixed reactions, with many of his followers questioning the motives behind the detention.
According to sources close to the matter, he was invited by the EFCC for questioning over alleged cyberbullying and involvement in controversial online activities that may have contravened certain provisions of the Cybercrime Act. However, no formal charges were filed during his time in custody.
In a video posted shortly after his release, VeryDarkMan expressed gratitude to his supporters, lawyers, and fans who stood by him. “This is just the beginning. I’m not backing down,” he declared, reaffirming his commitment to speak truth to power.
The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the circumstances of his detention and subsequent release. Legal analysts suggest that the case highlights ongoing tensions between freedom of expression and regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s digital space.
VeryDarkMan’s release has been met with widespread jubilation on social media, where the hashtag #FreeVeryDarkMan had trended for several days. Supporters see his freedom as a win for free speech and digital activism, while critics continue to call for responsible use of online platforms.
