The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Tom Njamanze, whose passing was confirmed by close associates on Friday. The seasoned actor, known for his powerful screen presence and memorable roles in numerous classic Nollywood films, reportedly died after a brief illness in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Tom Njamanze was a household name in the early 2000s, often cast in serious and commanding roles that showcased his deep voice, intense expressions, and versatile acting skills. Over the years, he featured in dozens of Nollywood productions, earning respect from colleagues and love from fans who appreciated his artistry and commitment to his craft.

Though not always in the public eye in recent years, Njamanze remained an active figure within the acting community. He was involved in stage plays, mentorship programs for young actors, and was vocal about the challenges facing veteran entertainers in Nigeria, including poor healthcare, lack of recognition, and minimal industry support.

Reacting to the news, fellow actor and friend, Steve Eboh, described Njamanze’s death as a “huge loss to the industry,” noting that the late actor contributed immensely to the growth of Nollywood during its foundational years. “Tom was a quiet force. He was one of those actors who never courted controversy but always delivered brilliance in every role,” Eboh said.

Tributes have also poured in from Nollywood stakeholders, including the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), filmmakers, fans, and entertainment journalists who remember Njamanze as a gifted performer, a gentleman, and a committed professional.

Many fans recall his notable performances in films such as “Igodo,” “Oracle,” and “Last Burial,” where he brought gravitas to every character he portrayed. Though his roles were sometimes overshadowed by more flamboyant contemporaries, Njamanze’s legacy lives on in the depth he brought to the screen.

As condolences continue to flood social media, fans and colleagues alike have called for greater recognition of veteran actors while they are still alive, urging the industry to honor their sacrifices and contributions more consistently.

Tom Njamanze is survived by his children and extended family. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.

His death marks yet another painful reminder of the passing era of foundational Nollywood talents, whose early sacrifices paved the way for today’s booming Nigerian film industry. May his soul rest in peace.
