Nigeria’s Super Falcons have once again proven their dominance in African women’s football, defeating long-time rivals South Africa 2-1 in a high-stakes semifinal clash to book their spot in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The thrilling encounter, held at a packed stadium in Morocco, lived up to expectations as two of Africa’s football giants went head-to-head in what many dubbed the “final before the final.” The Super Falcons came into the match with fierce determination, having lost to Banyana Banyana in the 2022 WAFCON opener — a defeat that had lingered in the minds of both players and fans.
Nigeria took the lead early in the first half with a clinical strike from forward Asisat Oshoala, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire home from close range. The Falcons doubled their lead just before halftime through midfielder Toni Payne, whose long-range effort beat the South African goalkeeper and sent the Nigerian supporters into wild celebration.
South Africa responded with urgency in the second half, piling pressure on the Nigerian defense. Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Jermaine Seoposenwe pulled one back for Banyana Banyana after a swift counterattack. However, the Super Falcons held their nerve, weathering a late surge from the South Africans to maintain their 2-1 advantage until the final whistle.
Coach Randy Waldrum praised his team’s discipline and fighting spirit, calling the victory “a statement performance” and expressing confidence ahead of the final. “This win is not just about reaching the final—it’s about proving that Nigeria remains the powerhouse of African women’s football,” he said.
With this victory, Nigeria now advances to the WAFCON final for a record-extending 12th time, as they look to reclaim the title they narrowly lost in 2022. They will face either Morocco or Cameroon in the grand finale, where another chapter in the Super Falcons’ storied legacy awaits.
The win has reignited national pride, with messages of congratulations pouring in from across Nigeria, including from top government officials, sports icons, and fans who have long rallied behind the women’s team.
As the countdown to the final begins, the Super Falcons are just one game away from lifting yet another continental trophy—and they look more than ready to make history once again.
