  • Slide 1 of 26: Since 1962, Secret Agent Bond—James Bond—has been at Her Majesty’s service in 25 movies. From the Sean Connery era to Daniel Craig today, here are all of 007's films, ranked from worst to best according to Rotten Tomatoes. (The 1967 version of Casino Royal is not included in this list because it isn’t really a James Bond film, but rather a comedic parody on the subject.)
  • Slide 2 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 37%Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Tanya Roberts, Grace JonesDirector: John GlenA businessman tries to monopolize the microchip market with a foolproof plan: create an earthquake that will destroy Silicon Valley. After seven films as James Bond, Roger Moore exited the series on a bad note in a far-fetched story, even for the 007 universe.
  • Slide 3 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 40%Stars: Roger Moore, Louis Jourdan, Maud Adams, Kristina WaybornDirector: John GlenBest known for its title (we won’t explain why—go ask your parents), Octopussy takes it a little too far with a near-ridiculous plot. Who wants to see James Bond in a gorilla suit?
  • Slide 4 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 42%Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud AdamsDirector: Guy HamiltonAs the title implies, James Bond must arrest an assassin with a golden gun, played by the great Christopher Lee. Unfortunately, even Lee couldn’t save the film from being boring.
  • Slide 5 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 53%Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Sophie Marceau, Robert Carlyle, Denise RichardsDirector: Michael AptedThe world is not enough, at least according to the title. Apparently, Pierce Brosnan’s charisma and Bond Girl Sophie Marceau’s charm weren't enough to save a plot so poorly conceived that one critic described it as “pure nonsense art of the [D]adaist school.”
  • Slide 6 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 57%Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Toby Stephens, Rosamund PikeDirector: Lee TamahoriTo celebrate the series’ 40thanniversary, Bond Girl Halle Berry reproduced the classic Dr. No scene in which Ursula Andress emerges from the water in a bikini. The fact that this is the movie’s most memorable scene says a lot about the rest of the film.
  • Slide 7 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 57%Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michelle Yeoh, Don BakerDirector: Roger SpottiswoodeIn Tomorrow Never Dies, James Bond stops a media magnate from starting World War III. No big deal—what did you do today?
  • Slide 8 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 59%Stars: Roger Moore, Lois Chiles, Michael Lonsdale, Richard KielDirector: Lewis GilbertTwo years after the phenomenal success of Star Wars, James Bond producers hopped on the bandwagon and sent 007 into space! This time, the secret agent doesn’t just stop World War III, he stops Earth’s complete destruction. Not bad for a week’s work.
  • Slide 9 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 63%Stars: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Naomie Harris, Ben WhishawDirector: Sam MendesFrom the beginning of the series until 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever, the SPECTRE organization was James Bond’s arch enemy. Three decades and a legal battle later, it's back with a vengeance.
  • Slide 10 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 63%Stars: Sean Connery, Jill St. John, Charles Gray, Lana WoodDirector: Guy HamiltonGeorge Lazenby donned 007’s suit for a single movie before Sean Connery took it back. According to one Time Magazine film critic, Bond “look[ed] better than ever” with Connery back in the saddle.
  • Slide 11 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 65%Stars: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi DenchDirector: Marc ForsterThe preceding movie, Casino Royale, was a big hit (wait 'til you see where it ranks on this list!), so the bar was set pretty high for Quantum of Solace, which many viewed as disappointing.
  • Slide 12 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 69%Stars: Sean Connery, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Max von Sydow, Barbara CarreraDirector: Irvin KershnerFun fact: Never Say Never Again is the only James Bond movie that wasn’t produced by Eon Productions, the group responsible for the character since 1961. Sean Connery returns in this special instalment—a remake of Thunderball—that features an older James Bond coming out of retirement for a mission.
  • Slide 13 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 65%Stars: Roger Moore, Yaphet Kotto, Jane Seymour, Julius W. HarrisDirector: Guy HamiltonRoger Moore was the third actor to don the tuxedo, lending the series a much-appreciated lighter tone. Blaxploitation movies were all the rage at the time, and James Bond jumped clumsily onto that bandwagon with a film in which all the bad guys are black.
  • Slide 14 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 72%Stars: Timothy Dalton, Maryam d'Abo, Jeroen Krabbé, Joe Don BakerDirector: John GlenWhen Roger Moore left the role as Bond after seven movies, the producers approached Pierce Brosnan to take the reins in The Living Daylights. He refused as his schedule was already full with the TV series Remington Steele. At the last minute, the role went to Timothy Dalton for two films. Nevertheless, it was only a matter of time before Brosnan would don the tux…
  • Slide 15 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 72%Stars: Sean Connery, Donald Pleasence, Tetsuro Tamba, Mie HamaDirector: Lewis GilbertThe author of the screenplay for the fifth Bond film was none other than Roald Dahl, author of James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, novels that were all eventually adapted for the big screen. That’s quite a surprising cast of characters!
  • Slide 16 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 72%Stars: Roger Moore, Lois Maxwell, James Villiers, Carole BouquetDirector: John GlenAfter getting through the '60s and ’70s, the series entered the ’80s with a blander James Bond. Less humour, fewer gadgets, and hardly any spectacular special effects, resulting in a less than enthusiastic reception.
  • Slide 17 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 77%Stars: Timothy Dalton, Carey Lowell, Robert Davi, Talisa SotoDirector: John GlenThis time, Agent 007 isn’t working for the British Secret Service—he’s avenging a friend’s death. Licence to Kill features the second and final appearance by Timothy Dalton, who played a more violent and intense Bond, an approach that didn’t return until Daniel Craig took up the mantle.
  • Slide 18 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 78%Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Izabella Scorupco, Famke JanssenDirector: Martin CampbellPierce Brosnan makes his first of four appearances as Bond in GoldenEye. The movie also marks the arrival of Dame Judi Dench as M, a role she would play until Skyfall in 2012.
  • Slide 19 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 80%Stars: Roger Moore, Curd Jürgens, Barbara Bach, Richard KielDirector: Lewis GilbertIn The Spy Who Loved Me, we meet one of the series’ most recognizable bad guys: Jaws. Played by the towering Richard Kiel, Jaws is unforgettable with his metal teeth. Back by popular demand, he made a second appearance in Moonraker.
  • Slide 20 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%Stars: George Lazenby, Telly Savalas, Diana Rigg, Ilse SteppatDirector: Peter R. HuntOne and done. George Lazenby played James Bond in just one movie. Convinced by a producer that James Bond wouldn’t survive into the 1970s, he refused a lucrative contract to continue with the role. Today, many feel that this film is often overlooked.
  • Slide 21 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 86%Stars: Sean Connery, Adolfo Celi, Claudine Auger, Luciana PaluzziDirector: Terence YoungThunderball shows its kitschy colours right from the start as Agent 007 escapes using a jetpack. The film cost $5.5 million, a massive amount at the time, but you can see every dollar on screen.
  • Slide 22 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Naomie HarrisDirector: Sam MendesIt’s often said that to make a good movie, you need a good bad guy. In Skyfall, that’s Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva. His performance is as memorable as the theme song by Adele.
  • Slide 23 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%Stars: Sean Connery, Daniela Bianchi, Robert Shaw, Lotte LenyaDirector: Terence YoungReleased just one year after Dr. No, the second film in the series built on the momentum of the first instalment. Here we meet Q, played by Desmond Llewelyn, and his gadgets for the first time. Llewelyn would go on to appear in no fewer than 17 other James Bond movies.
  • Slide 24 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%Stars: Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Jack Lord, Joseph WisemanDirector: Terence YoungAgent 007, played by a young Sean Connery, makes his first appearance on the big screen in 1962. SPECTRE, a prominent organization in recent Bond movies, is also introduced. The doctor may have said no, but the public said yes, opening the door to 24 more films.
  • Slide 25 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%Stars: Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Judi DenchDirector: Martin CampbellDaniel Craig reinvented James Bond in a movie that’s far more serious than its predecessors. Casino Royale's high ranking on this list shows that the franchise still has a lot to offer, even four decades after Dr. No.
  • Slide 26 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 99%Stars: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley EatonDirector: Guy HamiltonWith a theme song sung by Shirley Bassey, an Aston Martin full of gadgets, and a giant laser that threatens to cut the good guys in two, Goldfinger is the film that embodies everything that is James Bond. It’s also the movie in which 007 says, for the first time, that he wants “a martini, shaken, not stirred.” It doesn’t get more classic than that.
