  • Slide 1 of 26: Since 1962, Secret Agent Bond—James Bond—has been at Her Majesty’s service in 25 movies. From the Sean Connery era to Daniel Craig today, here are all of 007's films, ranked from worst to best according to Rotten Tomatoes. (The 1967 version of Casino Royal is not included in this list because it isn’t really a James Bond film, but rather a comedic parody on the subject.)
  • Slide 2 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 37%Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Tanya Roberts, Grace JonesDirector: John GlenA businessman tries to monopolize the microchip market with a foolproof plan: create an earthquake that will destroy Silicon Valley. After seven films as James Bond, Roger Moore exited the series on a bad note in a far-fetched story, even for the 007 universe.
  • Slide 3 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 40%Stars: Roger Moore, Louis Jourdan, Maud Adams, Kristina WaybornDirector: John GlenBest known for its title (we won’t explain why—go ask your parents), Octopussy takes it a little too far with a near-ridiculous plot. Who wants to see James Bond in a gorilla suit?
  • Slide 4 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 42%Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud AdamsDirector: Guy HamiltonAs the title implies, James Bond must arrest an assassin with a golden gun, played by the great Christopher Lee. Unfortunately, even Lee couldn’t save the film from being boring.

Apparently, Pierce Brosnan’s charisma and Bond Girl Sophie Marceau’s charm weren't enough to save a plot so poorly conceived that one critic described it as “pure nonsense art of the [D]adaist school.”
  • Slide 6 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 57%Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Toby Stephens, Rosamund PikeDirector: Lee TamahoriTo celebrate the series’ 40thanniversary, Bond Girl Halle Berry reproduced the classic Dr. No scene in which Ursula Andress emerges from the water in a bikini. The fact that this is the movie’s most memorable scene says a lot about the rest of the film.

This time, the secret agent doesn’t just stop World War III, he stops Earth’s complete destruction. Not bad for a week’s work.

Three decades and a legal battle later, it's back with a vengeance.
  • Slide 10 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 63%Stars: Sean Connery, Jill St. John, Charles Gray, Lana WoodDirector: Guy HamiltonGeorge Lazenby donned 007’s suit for a single movie before Sean Connery took it back. According to one Time Magazine film critic, Bond “look[ed] better than ever” with Connery back in the saddle.

  • Slide 12 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 69%Stars: Sean Connery, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Max von Sydow, Barbara CarreraDirector: Irvin KershnerFun fact: Never Say Never Again is the only James Bond movie that wasn’t produced by Eon Productions, the group responsible for the character since 1961. Sean Connery returns in this special instalment—a remake of Thunderball—that features an older James Bond coming out of retirement for a mission.

HarrisDirector: Guy HamiltonRoger Moore was the third actor to don the tuxedo, lending the series a much-appreciated lighter tone. Blaxploitation movies were all the rage at the time, and James Bond jumped clumsily onto that bandwagon with a film in which all the bad guys are black.

He refused as his schedule was already full with the TV series Remington Steele. At the last minute, the role went to Timothy Dalton for two films. Nevertheless, it was only a matter of time before Brosnan would don the tux…
  • Slide 15 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 72%Stars: Sean Connery, Donald Pleasence, Tetsuro Tamba, Mie HamaDirector: Lewis GilbertThe author of the screenplay for the fifth Bond film was none other than Roald Dahl, author of James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, novels that were all eventually adapted for the big screen. That’s quite a surprising cast of characters!
  • Slide 16 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 72%Stars: Roger Moore, Lois Maxwell, James Villiers, Carole BouquetDirector: John GlenAfter getting through the '60s and ’70s, the series entered the ’80s with a blander James Bond. Less humour, fewer gadgets, and hardly any spectacular special effects, resulting in a less than enthusiastic reception.

Licence to Kill features the second and final appearance by Timothy Dalton, who played a more violent and intense Bond, an approach that didn’t return until Daniel Craig took up the mantle.

Played by the towering Richard Kiel, Jaws is unforgettable with his metal teeth. Back by popular demand, he made a second appearance in Moonraker.
  • Slide 20 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%Stars: George Lazenby, Telly Savalas, Diana Rigg, Ilse SteppatDirector: Peter R. HuntOne and done. George Lazenby played James Bond in just one movie. Convinced by a producer that James Bond wouldn’t survive into the 1970s, he refused a lucrative contract to continue with the role. Today, many feel that this film is often overlooked.
  • Slide 21 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 86%Stars: Sean Connery, Adolfo Celi, Claudine Auger, Luciana PaluzziDirector: Terence YoungThunderball shows its kitschy colours right from the start as Agent 007 escapes using a jetpack. The film cost $5.5 million, a massive amount at the time, but you can see every dollar on screen.
  • Slide 22 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Naomie HarrisDirector: Sam MendesIt’s often said that to make a good movie, you need a good bad guy. In Skyfall, that’s Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva. His performance is as memorable as the theme song by Adele.
  • Slide 23 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%Stars: Sean Connery, Daniela Bianchi, Robert Shaw, Lotte LenyaDirector: Terence YoungReleased just one year after Dr. No, the second film in the series built on the momentum of the first instalment. Here we meet Q, played by Desmond Llewelyn, and his gadgets for the first time. Llewelyn would go on to appear in no fewer than 17 other James Bond movies.
  • Slide 24 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%Stars: Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Jack Lord, Joseph WisemanDirector: Terence YoungAgent 007, played by a young Sean Connery, makes his first appearance on the big screen in 1962. SPECTRE, a prominent organization in recent Bond movies, is also introduced. The doctor may have said no, but the public said yes, opening the door to 24 more films.
  • Slide 25 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 95%Stars: Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Judi DenchDirector: Martin CampbellDaniel Craig reinvented James Bond in a movie that’s far more serious than its predecessors. Casino Royale's high ranking on this list shows that the franchise still has a lot to offer, even four decades after Dr. No.
  • Slide 26 of 26: Rotten Tomatoes rating: 99%Stars: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley EatonDirector: Guy HamiltonWith a theme song sung by Shirley Bassey, an Aston Martin full of gadgets, and a giant laser that threatens to cut the good guys in two, Goldfinger is the film that embodies everything that is James Bond. It’s also the movie in which 007 says, for the first time, that he wants “a martini, shaken, not stirred.” It doesn’t get more classic than that.
