Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar, son of the former Governor of Kano state and current National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has been appointed as the Executive Director, Technical Services of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

 

Umar was appointed into the new REA management team by President Bola Tinubu following the indefinite suspension slammed on the agency’s team led by Ahmad Salihijo.

 

Salhijo, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, was suspended alongside three directors who worked with him.

 

The directors are Olaniyi Alaba Netufo, Executive Director, Corporate Services; Barka Sajou, Executive Director, Technical Services; and Sa’adatu Balgore, Executive Director, Rural Electrification Fund (REF).

 

Umar won the APC ticket for Dawakin Tofa/Tofa /Rimin Gado constituency but lost the election to New Nigerian Peoples Party’s Hon Tijjani Jobe, who had previously worked at the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC). He also played a key role in the Tinubu/Shettima campaign, especially in the youth wing.

Tinubu suspends Rural Electrification Agency MD and three others over N1.2bn fraud

 

Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad has been suspended by President Bola Tinubu alongside three other executive directors of the agency over alleged ₦1.2 billion fraud.

 

Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said this came after findings from an investigation.

 

It was noted that the anti-corruption agency conducting the investigation has already recovered some of the alleged fraudulently appropriated funds. Tinubu has also ordered a wider probe into the matter.

 

The three other executive directors of the REA suspended with Salihijo Ahmad include Olaniyi Alaba Netufo, the Executive Director of Corporate Services; Barka Sajou, the Executive Director of Technical Services and Sa’adatu Balgore, the Executive Director of Rural Electrification Fund (REF).

 

An interim team has been constituted to manage the agency. Members of this team include Ayoade Gboyega as Executive Director of Corporate Services; Umar Abdullahi Umar as Executive Director of Technical Services; Doris Uboh as Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF) and Olufemi Akinyelure as Head of Project Management Unit, Nigeria Electrification Project.

 

The statement read;

 

“In the light of new findings unearthed during a comprehensive investigation into the financial activities of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), President Bola Tinubu has approved the indefinite suspension of the Managing Director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, alongside three Executive Directors of the Agency, from office:

“Olaniyi Alaba Netufo — Executive Director, Corporate Services; Barka Sajou — Executive Director, Technical Services; and Sa’adatu Balgore — Executive Director, Rural Electrification Fund (REF)

“Furthermore, President Tinubu has ordered a wider investigation into the conduct of the aforementioned officials in a fraudulent misexpenditure amounting to over N1.2 billion over the past two years, some of which has already been recovered by anti-graft agencies.

“By the directive of the President, the following qualified Nigerians are appointed to serve in the new management team of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in an acting capacity with immediate effect:

“Abba Abubakar Aliyu — Managing Director/CEO; Ayoade Gboyega — Executive Director, Corporate Services; Umar Abdullahi Umar — Executive Director, Technical Services; Doris Uboh — Executive Director, Rural Electrification Fund (REF); Olufemi Akinyelure — Head of Project Management Unit, Nigeria Electrification Project.

“President Bola Tinubu expects all appointees in his administration to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability in the discharge of their duties and reiterates his determination to elevate the yearnings of Nigerians for good governance and qualitative service delivery above the narrow interests of individuals who are entrusted to provide critical services to the Nigerian people.”
