The health ministry has confirmed the outbreak of Ebola in Jinja district following the death of a 45-year-old man on Thursday, November 10, 2022.

“A fatal Ebola case has been confirmed in Kayalwe B village, Buyengo sub-county, Jinja district. This was a 45-year-old male who is linked to a probable case, his brother,” health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng said in a post on social media today, November 13, 2022.

Aceng said the victim’s brother, who is linked to the Rubaga cluster, travelled to Jinja where he was ill for 10 days and died on November 3, 2022.

Ugandan authorities have been struggling to contain the highly infectious and deadly Ebola since the epidemic was declared on September 20, 2022, after the death of a 24-year-old resident of Madudu sub-county in Mubende district.

The disease has also spread to the districts of Kassanda, Kyegegwa, Kagadi, Bunyangabu, Wakiso and Kampala.

According to World Health Organisation, as of November 7, there have been 136 confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease including 53 deaths.

Among these, at least 18 health workers were infected, of whom seven died. ;

There are also 21 probable cases who died before the samples were obtained for confirmation.
