Iyabo Obasanjo has announced the suspension of her bid for the Ogun State governorship following the emergence of Solomon Adeola as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 election.
Obasanjo, who is also the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, disclosed her decision in a statement issued on Monday, noting that her withdrawal came after consultations within party leadership and the outcome of a caucus meeting held in Abeokuta.
She expressed appreciation to party leaders at both state and national levels for the opportunity to participate in the process and extended her congratulations to Adeola following his emergence.
According to her, the development prompted her to put her ambition on hold in the interest of party unity and collective progress.
“I congratulate him and wish him success,” she said, while thanking her supporters across Ogun State for their loyalty and encouragement throughout her campaign.
Obasanjo also urged her followers to remain calm and optimistic, stressing that the journey toward a better Ogun State continues despite the latest development.
Yayi Emerges Consensus Candidate
Senator Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, currently represents Ogun West in the Senate and was adopted as the party’s consensus candidate during a caucus meeting held at the APC secretariat in Abeokuta.
His emergence is widely seen as a significant development in Ogun State politics ahead of the 2027 governorship race, as party stakeholders appear to be closing ranks early in preparation for the election.
Political observers say Obasanjo’s decision to suspend her ambition may further strengthen internal cohesion within the party and reduce the likelihood of divisive primaries.
With the consensus arrangement now in place, attention is expected to shift toward building a unified campaign structure and consolidating support across the state.
